If this is my soul’s work, why am I not getting clients?
If you’re a healer or holistic practitioner who feels called to this work but isn’t getting clients, this post is for you
As a heart-centred business supporting holistic practitioners, spiritual businesses and wellness centres, I meet many people who tell me their work was guided. They felt called, or they were shown the way by their soul or by God/the universe. They know they came here at this time to be of service.
And at the same time, they’re struggling. The clients aren’t coming, the income isn’t there, and the business just isn’t working.
I’ve been there myself, as a practitioner, as a café owner, and in my current business. I’ve often asked (or screamed) “If you want me to do this, God, why isn’t it working? Why is it so hard?”
Why isn’t my healing business working? What are we actually asking?
It’s such a deep and honest question, with a beautifully childlike purity to it. It deserves a gentle, honest unpacking. So what are we actually asking when we say “why isn’t it working, why is it so hard?”
Underneath, I think there are a few questions folded into one:
Did I get it wrong? Was the guidance real, or did I imagine it?
Have I been let down? I said yes to the call, I trusted, I showed up. Where’s the support?
Is this what trust is supposed to look like? I thought following my soul’s path would feel easier than this.
Tucked inside all three is an assumption most of us hold without ever saying it out loud: if it’s guided, it will be carried. That if the call is real, the universe will do the delivering, the clients, the income and the practicalities.
It’s an understandable assumption, but that doesn’t make it true. I actually don’t recall the universe saying it would do all the work for me... do you?
Imagine a mother who keeps doing everything for her child, even though she knows the child can do it themselves. The child is unsure, and instead of saying “you’ve got this, just try, I’m here with you,” she agrees with their doubt and does it for them.
What kind of mother would God be if she agreed with us and said “yep, you’re right, you can’t do that, here you go”?
God knows you haven’t been sitting back. She’s seen the training, the inner work, the meditating, the praying, the vision boards and every manifestation technique you’ve thrown at it. She has heard your prayers and she knows you’re capable. So the question is: are you willing to do what it takes? Do you trust yourself?
A different kind of prayer for when the clients aren’t coming
Sometimes the honest answer is no. Sometimes it’s that I’ll get a job in Tesco and serve people from there, because I need to make money to sustain myself. That isn’t failure. If my guidance is to help people, I can do that to the best of my ability wherever I am.
And sometimes the answer is yes. Yes, I’ll do the dull parts, and I’ll show up.
Either way, if I’m talking to a mother who believes in me, then I’d ask differently. Instead of asking for clients to appear, for the money to come, or for it all to feel easier, we could ask:
Give me the strength to do the things I find hard, and remind me that I’m supported while I do it.
Help me show up for the parts of this I’d rather avoid.
Show me honestly what I’m willing and able to do.
Give me the courage to see where I actually am, without shame.
And if the honest answer is that this isn’t the right way for me to serve right now:
Give me the strength to let it go, and to know that letting go isn’t failing.
These are harder prayers, because they don’t hand the work over. They ask for help with the work, and they ask for the truth. They’re the ones we can act on straight away: the strength to send the email, the honesty to look at the numbers, the courage to make the decision we’ve been circling.
Five questions to help you get clients as a healer or holistic practitioner
Here are five questions to get started with in your business today:
Who exactly is my work for, and would they recognise themselves on my website?
Can someone tell what I offer, what it costs and how to book within a minute?
How many people heard about my work in the last month?
How many did I actually invite to work with me?
What am I doing every week to be visible, and am I doing it consistently?
None of this is unspiritual. It’s how the work gets from you to the people waiting for it.
If you’d like a hand with any of it I offer a free 30-minute call.
